Weighted vs unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA treats every class the same, with an A worth 4.0 regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds extra points (commonly +0.5 or +1.0) for honors, AP, or IB courses to reflect their added rigor — which is why a student’s weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 even though the unweighted scale caps at 4.0. Colleges often recalculate applicants’ GPAs on their own scale, so both numbers are worth knowing.
How cumulative GPA is calculated
Cumulative GPA is the total grade points earned across all terms divided by total credit hours attempted — not a simple average of each term’s GPA, since terms with more credit hours carry proportionally more weight. Add each course’s credit hours and letter grade and the calculator weights them correctly.
Projecting the GPA you need next term
If you know your current cumulative GPA and credit hours, and how many credit hours are left this term, you can work backward to find the GPA needed this term to hit a target cumulative GPA — useful for scholarship or academic-standing thresholds. The calculator runs this projection directly instead of requiring manual algebra.
