Tipping norms vary a lot by country
15–20% is standard restaurant tipping in the US, while the UK and much of Europe treat 10–12% (or a small rounded amount) as generous, and some countries fold service into the bill entirely (a service charge already added, where an extra tip isn’t expected). The calculator’s country presets set a sensible starting percentage so you’re not guessing at an unfamiliar norm while traveling or eating out abroad.
Splitting the bill fairly
Splitting evenly is simplest, but “per-person total” needs to include the tip and tax, not just the food total — otherwise the group under-tips or under-covers the check. The calculator adds the tip to the subtotal first, then divides by the party size, so each person’s share reflects the full bill.
Tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive tipping
Some people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others on the post-tax total — the difference is usually small but can matter on a large bill. The calculator supports separating tax from the tip base if you want to tip on the pre-tax amount specifically.
